RAGING is a triology of plays by Deirdre Kinahan chronicling seven years of warfare that led up to Ireland’s independence from Britain. Together, they challenge the historical narrative, mixing true-life testimonies with powerful drama to create a theatrical hurricane of empathy, action and truth. We performed the first play, WILD SKY, in the theater tent at Irish Fest 2024. The play tells the story of two young people caught up in the 1916 Easter Rising. The Pint and a Play readings consist of the two remaining plays in the trilogy, EMBARGO and OUTRAGE.
EMBARGO
Author: Deirdre Kinahan
EMBARGO, focuses on a pivotal moment during the Irish War of Independence. It was commissioned by Dublin Port, Irish Rail and Fishamble Theatre Company to highlight the role of civil militancy during the Irish War of Independence against Britain. In particular, they wanted to dramatize the little-known strike initiated by dockers and train drivers, who refused to handle munitions or transport British soldiers for a period during 1920-21, at the risk of losing their jobs or worse.

OUTRAGE
Author: Deirdre Kinahan
This play is about narrative, about how history is always written by the victors, and inevitably by men. Deirdre found it fascinating when researching the role of women in Ireland’s revolution that many of them worked in the realm of propaganda. The play revolves around an event which took place in 1923 in Kerry, where two women who supported the anti-treaty faction were violently assaulted by Irish Free State soldiers, refuting the notion that rape and sexual assault did not play a part in the Irish Wars.
“The Irish Revolution is to my mind a great event, a necessary event, the event which sparked the fire and paved the way to Ireland’s future – to the prosperous, progressive, European nation we eventually became. Like all nations, however, Ireland has her ghosts.” writes Deirdre.
